I remember SBC doing a Fiber to the Curb project a few years back but haven't heard much of it since. Lately I've noticed a crapload of Verizon trucks and fiber splicers all over my neighborhood (In Keller, Texas). Low and behold I come across this article that seems to explain things. I'm not sure if these prices are real...but you sure as hell wont find me complaining about a 15MB/2MB internet connection to my house.

This could actually be good for competition of other services. For Example: In many areas you have only have one choice for Cable TV/iNet services, and it's either that or Satellite. Service like FIOS would allow shitloads of other companies to compete for your business without having the overhead of laying a new infrastructure.

Any Thoughts?

true, but verizon is going to charge an arm and a leg to each company who wants to use the line.

This means your just going to have a bunch of different companes (startups) who all offer about the same price (due to supply and demand) and most either wont have the support infustructure to handle all the customers.. or they will be big companes who already have a presense in the area.

In that case, it would really only lower the actual prices a few dollars because when the bigger companes see the smaller ones charging so much less, they will lower their prices also. BUT over time the smaller companies will get bought out, go out of business, or something else.. which in the long run leaves you right back where you started.

Good Points. What you describe sounds exactly like what happened when CLEC's were allowed to sell services on Ma Bell's lines. There was a huge explosion of DSL providers that started offering services damn near everywhere the ILEC had a footprint. Most of those are long gone now days though...I guess it's hard to provide a competitive service when your competitor owns the loop.

At any rate I wish the best to Verizon...mostly due to my own personal desire for a 10+ MB connection at home.

Verizon is basically restructing all the old analogue lines and replacing them with fibre. My father-in-law, who handles all of the contract workers for Verizon in 3/4ths of MA. is in charge of a lot of these projects (within our state) and claims other offices are doing the exact same thing.

cheers,

dave

Why Keller is all I have to ask. I live less than 5 minutes from downtown Keller but still can't get this service. We probably won't be added to the expansion for a while either

FTTH & FTTC are different, FTTC they run fiber to the phone box for that block/development. FTTH they run fiber to each persons home. You can do crazy things with FTTH, even more than you can with FTTC. While FTTH sounds like it would increase competition and it would between the cable companies and the RBOC's. Under the current (and new proposed) rules for deregulation the RBOC's don't have to allow CLEC's access to the fiber infastructure. While they are required to maintain the copper to the home it basically shuts out the CLEC's.

However, in the grand scheme of things I feel it's a good thing, I co-own a CLEC and can say that we are getting ready to deploy our own FTTH in areas that the RBOC completely forgot about as they are too busy competing with large cable/satellite/cell phone companies. It's crazy how neglected some of these areas are, places that don't have DSL, no voicemail, can't do PRI or DID. It's horrible.

I have had 10mbps fiber optics for well over 2 years now (at home in sacramento, ca) Surewest is my ISP, great stuff, I host gaming servers all the time :)

Yeah I work for said company and it's a big focus for the near future. Texas is the first to see it rolled out to the public. And to someone above who siad the price will be outrageous . That is not true. It will be comparible with Cable prices (5Mbps) and There will be 30Mbps Packages that will be priced upwards but somewhere along the 89$ range I think. Either way Verizon is looking to take back what has been lost to the Cable companies. They're aiming for the jugular :p
