Carver AV505 80 Watt, 5 Channel Amplifier
This new amplifier was specifically designed for Home Theater applications including it's use of innovative Power Steering technology, yet it draws from a rich Carver heritage ranging in experience from professional audio to Lightstar technology. It uses an entirely new dual differential input circuit topology that operates in constant Class-A mode. In addition, the new amplifier features monoblock modular construction and improved thermal management design.

Manufacturer's Warranty: 5 Years Parts / 5 Years Labor -Carry In Service
Was: $1499
Clearance Price:$288.32

It says limited time, so jump fast if you want it. Sounds like a pretty good buy if you're into this kind of thing, but then I'm not and I might be way out of line. :p

How could they be an authorized dealer for a manufacturer that has been out of business for years? And a 5 year warranty? Has Carver been started up again?

website says "Home theater applications" yet the amplifier is in a rackmount chassis LOL
Yeah I don't know too many people who have their home theater equipment in a rack enclosure (though I do know several people including myself who have their networking equipment in a rack)

Carver Professional was a spin off of the original Carver. They handle the pro gear used by bands at concerts. It's a different company.

I emailed OneCall and got this response:

"The amplifier is new in the box complete with full warranty. Warranty work is performed by Sunfire in Washington state."

This makes sense since Sunfire is the company Bob Carver started when he left Carver Corp. After Carver went out of business he apparently bought it back along with some old inventory. These amps were manufactured in the mid 90s.

I have an AV-505 in my home theater and it's an outstanding amp. Since the price here for a new in box is about what they go for used on ebay I bought one to have as a spare. Great deal on this amp. [H]ot without a doubt.

I'm also the original owner of two Phase Linear 400 amps. Those were from Bob Carver's original company back in the 70s.

Not only is my home theater equipment in a rack (amp and HTPC included) but I custom built the rack myself. There are some crazy people in home theater.

Get into the higher end of Home Theater and you will almost exclusively see HT equipment house in racks outside of the theater. I am going to pick up one of these for my new house as well.

OneCall shipped mine within a couple hours of the order. Tracking already shows it picked up by FedEx.

The amp came today. It was well packed, double boxed. It is in fact a brand new AV505 complete with manual and original box. This is a heavyweight amp at 42 lbs, so the $35 shipping is reasonable. The manual is copyright 1996 and the amp is identical to the one I already have, so this clearly has been in storage for a long time. The 80 watts a channel is a real 80 watts, unlike some of the amps manufactured today. This amp will make an incredible match with a high end 5.1 sound card and some really good speakers. If you have the bucks and need an amp grab one. I'll be testing it out over the next couple of days.

I bit. Looks like an awesome amp. I have always thought Carver to be one of the best makers of audiophile gear. This was too good to pass up.

I'd rather not use a HTPC. Any other suggestions? Preamps seem to be hard to find.

If you do not have a rackmount, can you still use this? Also, how do you adjust the volume with this thing, or do is my idea of an amp a little mixed up? Also, what would you need to use this with your computer, people have mentioned that a good soundcard can act as a pre-amp, how?

You can definitely use it even if you don't have a rack...just leave it sitting there on a shelf/table/stand. The volume can be adjusted anytime you have an RCA output that has an adjustable output. So to use a soundcard, get a miniplug to RCA cable, and plug that in the RCAs in the back.

So the volume control on my Audigy2 would work? That's awesome. This amp would go great the the new vifa tower I want to build. But it sure would be nice to have a receiver, and if I get this I would have to wait a while to build the speakers, and wait even longer to get a receiver. BUT if it is that good of a deal then I suppose it would be worth it.

Got mine 3 days after I ordered! Brand new, sealed box. Found a decent receiver too. On clearance at my local Best Buy (Pittsburg, CA) was a Pioneer VSX-D812K for $250. Sales guy said they're discontinuing the model. Sale lasts until 4/30. Dolby Digital/DTS receiver with 6 channel pre-amp outputs! Decent receiver for the money.

he means 6.1 Grieg.

I agree. If it were 6 channel or even better 7 channel I would definatly buy it. BUT I already have enough 5 channel amps. Sweet deal though.

I already have a powered sub. I'll run that off the receiver and power all the other speakers from the Carver. Just needed something to control the amp. The VSX-D812K will do the trick.

for a reciever, i got a last year model onkyo normal like 650 at frys for 500 beucase the new stock was coming in.. but It has 80 watts per channel, and sounds great.. i dunno how much an amp will help :D

To all that want 6.1 7.1 or what ever. You do reallize these are only 300 a pop. What are you going to get for 300? Buy 2, 10 channels for $600. That would give you your 7.1, and a few left over for, bass shakers, maybe a 2nd channel for the front for small powered subs, 2nd room, get a phase changer and bridge a channel for a really nice 300watt sub amp.

Oh and on more thing, Can this thing even take 4ohm speakers? I cant find stuff on it anywhere, not even my original pamflets(sp) from the late ninties.

I would be shocked if it couldn't take a 4ohm load. Most amps can even handle down to 2ohms and carver has never been known to weak amps.

The AV-505 manual give in-line speaker fuse specs for 4 ohm speakers. That's the only place I see 4 ohm speakers mentioned.

Oh for the love of god please dont buy a Carver or Sunfire product...

Bunch of backstabbers and scandalous whoremongers, they are.
Got a lot of other audio companies in lawsuits over a bunch of garbage because they bent the rules and preyed on the ignorance of the patent offices.

My father has had a Phase Linear 400 for over 30 years, and I have one of the original Carver's, "The Receiever". If they're made like either one of those amps, they're flawless.
