How often do you replace your TP

I've had my boxes up for 1 year < and i'm not sure how frequently I need to change my thermal paste in order to have it still be effective..

Depends on the type of paste you're using. Some of the "cheaper" types have a tendancy to dry out over time. I had this happen to me several years back with some generic Radio Shack paste. After about 1.3 yrs on the cpu/HSF the stuff was so dry that it literally fell off in flakes as I removed my HSF to replace it. I now use Artic Silver pastes. I like the Alumina and Ceramique. I've tried the Silver 3 and it's not really any better (from my testing) than the Alumina or Ceramique and a lot harder to clean up when changing.

OOOHHHH! That kind of TP:eek: I'm interested to know everyone else's tendencies as well.

Whenever the roll runs out. If you've got long arms, you can reach into the second shelf of the closet without getting up. Handy!

yeah, I love being able to reach.

for thermal paste I change whenever I change HSF's... so for a lot of computers it has been years and everything is still working fine.

I change out my TP only when it dries out. However, with AS's TP, it always stays nice and moist. I can't remember when I've changed out my TP due to a dry paste.
AS's paste is the best.

ah, gotcha. i changed mine out- when i pulled the fan, the cpu came out of the ZIF <doh> i hate it when it does that, scares the hell out of me every time. it feels better now.. the stuff was pretty dry, even though it's AS3

Every time I remove and or reapply the heatsink.

I scraped the wax pad off of my old AMD stock HSF and applied some AS3. Dropped my temps 10deg C.

yea, i had AS3 before, i just felt...wrong..leaving it there for so long. i'm always terrified of removing my watercooling stuff out of my box.

If your post is supposed to read the way that I read it, then not only is that unbelievably funny, but I actually laughed out loud and everyone in my office just looked over at me.:D :D

I haven't reapplied thermal paste since I build this rig (which was sometime last summer...). It seems like temps haven't really changed much so I don't really feel a need to do it...

I was starting to wonder when someone was going to get it....
as for the real advice...if you get an AS product, it doesn't dry out and you shouldn't need to re-apply.

I haven't ever re-pasted mine...this comp runs basically 16-24 hours a day every day and has for about...2 years? A lot of heavy gaming (leaving games open for days at a time, while afk or whatever) and my cpu shows 52ºc, which I don't think is all that bad.

I only reapply TP when my AS5 gets crusty.

I use very little TP, it just dries up and flakes off anyways.
Why bother, ya know?
