Thanks everyone for your thoughts on this. I'm probably going to check out OI+Nappit, FreeNas, and OpenFiler. I will try to post some thoughts after I do some testing.
I'm not sure I'm ready to try the solaris / napp-it route. Although I understand the configuration, I was looking for a "install & go" purpose built system for sharing my media. Is anyone still using the freenas and/or openfiler?
I'm sure this has been beaten to death in this forum but I'm looking for some updated information. Quite a few posts around the net say:
"Openfiler hasn't been updated in years..."
"Openfiler is faster than freenas..."
"Openfiler is more robust than freenas..."
"freenas is lighter weight...
That's a bummer about your Hitachi experience. I've had so many failed maxtors, western digitals, and seagates that I refuse to buy anything BUT hitachi.
But I totally understand where you are coming from. A run of bad drives would force me away too. I'm glad you took all the lemons out of...
Your build looks amazing similar to my build before the members here got their hands on it :) Here's my build thread from a week ago: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1627168
But to comment on your post...
CASE: Nice choice.
RAID CARD: Sorry no advice here.. I'm not up-to-speed on all of...
Nice those Akasa Viper PWM fans look pretty awesome. The specs are a little odd though... Compared to the Scythe: less noise, less amperage but less airflow and higher RPM.
I don't have any fan expertise so I will probably go with a recommendation :) I added the ones you recommended to my build.
After a little more research on my power supply I should be ready to order. I'm getting the feeling that it really doesn't matter as long as it's more than 400 watts or so.
Thanks for all the feedback everyone. I'm going to swap up the fans to the COOLER MASTER R4-BMBS-20PK-R0
Still trying to decide on the power supply but I'm thinking the Corsair HX650 is the better option (over the TX650)
Thanks again for everyone's help on this. I will start a thread with...
danswartz: Excellent recommendation... I will take a look at those.
TLB recommended the Tyan board. My only fear is if the board fails, will I lose all of my data since the raid config is stored in the board?
Anyone know of any issues with using a Corsair HX or TX 650? Should I use one over...
rive22: Thank you very much... those drives are a sweet upgrade for $5
Silenus: Excellent, I will definitely downsize the mobo/proc to the "Intel Xeon E3-1230 ($240) and the TYAN S5512WGM2NR" TLB mentioned earlier in the thread.
af22: I read through that thread yesterday and asked for an...
af22: Thanks for your input. TheLastBoyscout also mentioned this so I'm revising the mobo/cpu/ram combination. You bring up a good point with your "what will you use this for" question. I tinker at home quite a bit so I wanted a server where I could install openfiler, vsphere, hyper-v, etc. In...
I was going to use the onboard 6x sata connectors for my first 6 drives. Then move to a controller further down the road. (Something like the supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8) I was either going to use windows 2008 r2 raid or flexraid. I dont know much about flexraid outside of reading a few posts in...
Hello everyone,
I'm speccing out a home NAS and I was wondering if someone here could give my build a "once over" before I move forward. Here's what I'm thinking:
Norco RPC 4220 Case
TYAN S5512WGM2NR
Kingston 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Unbuffered DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600)
Intel Xeon...
Hows this build coming along? I have a similar build I'm starting and I would love someone to give it a "once over" to see if I'm missing anything. Feel up to it?
