Same exact issues. It was the MTU on the switch. Spent a week banging my head against it because we had set the damned MTU to 9000 on the switches and eventually in frustration started changing all of the settings in the environment and bumped the switch MTU to 9216. Started working immediately...
Power, cooling, and density. I could be way off on this and I'm open to arguments that 3.5" disks are better for power/cooling/density.
