At the end of the day, I gave up on the ZCR card. I got a PCI-e Adaptec 5805ZQ, rewired the backplane with new cables (the motherboard cables were too short to reach the card) and was up and running.
@JIMH425: Yes, the boot drive is right now a single 128 GB SSD. I am hoping to enable the embedded Intel ESB2 RAID controller and make that RAID-1, using both 128 GB SSDs. (It works under Windows and all the major flavors of Linux, I was very surprised that VMware doesn't know how to use it)

@Lizardking009: I do have a pair of 3ware 9650 SE 4-port PCI-e RAID Cards kicking around somewhere, but they don't support SAS, only SATA, so I wouldn't be able to use these drives. Plus I'd have to rewire things, instead of using the built-in...
