Good ideas, thanks. I'd like to get some black or brass coloured wire mesh some time
Thanks - if you check the original sketches, plenty of thought went into it, but yes, there were certainly some things that were missed. Mainly, how large some of the connectors are, and how easily things would...
Wow - thanks a lot for that post, that kind of cabling detail I think is phenomenal. I will most likely try to get as much big stuff done with this project (ie. get both systems up and running) and will then go back and look at making the cabling situation much more customized. Thanks for the...
Thanks!
Thanks!!
Wow, with all those SATA cables there, it sure messes things up, no?
I went ahead and threw in my current video card (Radeon HD5770, which kicks some pretty decent butt still). I'm sure I'll see an improvement from my P4 3.2!!!
And here's the magical moment...
With the faceplate out of the way, and hopefully, the last of the drilling / sawing / making sawdust portion over, for the right-hand cabinet, it meant I had the all clear to install more hardware.
Here are the two hard-drive trays with the actual HDD trays removed.
Gave them a nice...
Hehe, thanks for the tip haunter(Zargon!), I'll keep that in mind!
Thanks NicaDeli!
I guess it's been a while eh!
Well, you'll be glad to know, that I'm actually almost done. There've been a few changes to the original plan, etc, etc, but I've still been goign full steam ahead, just not a...
Feeling a bit more motivated about the right-hand cabinet, I decided that the foam fan-holder had to go. It was too large, was akward, and was difficult to keep straight and in the proper position.
I decided to put together a nice and clean fan holder:
After doing some measuring, I...
lol, thanks mannyman
First off I want to give out a huge thank you to Seasonic, who has decided to sponsor The Ultimate Computer Desk by sending a ~really~ sweet Power Supply my way. An 850 Watt Seasonic Gold.
Thanks Seasonic! We'll take a closer look at that PSU a bit later..
I...
I decided (In hindsight, unfortunately) to go ahead and mount the hard-drive racks so I could get some better measurements and ideas of how to manage the cables nicely.
Installed the fans and started to route some of the cables
Took out a handful of old SATA cables... (Yes, let's not...
Thanks - I think that you are correct, that there are basically no video cards that can max the x16 lanes anyways
Interesting... I would like to do ~something~ with the board and dual cpu's, so I'll have to look into that. Thanks for the idea!
So - it's been another few busy weeks, so...
Yup, it's looking pretty tricky in there. I think I will put the HDD cages in the actual air intake.. you'll see what I mean soon!
A huge thanks goes out to Gigabyte for supplying me with this amazing motherboard - a GA-Z68XUD4-B3.
Without a doubt, the coolest motherboard I have ever...
Those are certainly very good ideas. I'll give a wait and see to see how this works out - you'll see in this update, I managed to straighten out the fans pretty well anyhow. I'm not worried about them falling out either, since I cut the holes small, the fans fit pretty tightly.
Thanks ModestMoo...
Thanks unhappy_mage - fun stuff ahead!
Bang on mannyman, more deets to come soon, thanks for the positive comments!
After gluing a few blocks of foam together with a spray adhesive, I trimmed the block down to the appropriate size using a bandsaw.
Unfortunately, it wouldn't fit in...
Thanks aphasia - things are heating up, check out below!
Thanks walwalka - if you really want to build it, put a little love into it and you'll have all the patience in the world suddenly ;)
Thanks wra18th!
Thanks Rossi~!
Thanks Savi!
Sorry for the delay in updates everyone - I've been...
Thanks Vitafortis - it'd be nice to get into this hobby more seriously as a profession, but starting with custom-built PC desks seems like a bit of a stretch!
Thanks aphasia - the drawer stuff worked out real well as you'll see below - the new place is setup well - I'm actually very close to the...
Thanks, Uncle Humjaba!
So, after I used the table saw to make my reference cuts, I grabbed the router with a 1/2" flush cut bit, set it at the appropriate depth and went to town. Making the reference cuts made the rest of this usually tedious job easy.
When I went to do the...
