    Thanks for your suggestions. In this case, however, the problem is occurring on a cleanly installed Windows 10 system, with software (other than things like HWMonitor) installed.

    I've considered this. Or just removing a stick of RAM and seeing if the problem goes away full stop, regardless of memtest. I might give it a go. I agree the behaviour indicates thermal issues, but wouldn't the temperature sensors pick this up? HWMonitor shows nothing concerning in its 10...
