Some users have recently had their accounts hijacked. It seems that the now defunct EVGA forums might have compromised your password there and seems many are using the same PW here. We would suggest you UPDATE YOUR PASSWORD and TURN ON 2FA for your account here to further secure it. None of the compromised accounts had 2FA turned on.
Once you have enabled 2FA, your account will be updated soon to show a badge, letting other members know that you use 2FA to protect your account. This should be beneficial for everyone that uses FSFT.
That seems pretty clear, dont spend more money on your present computer, but try to overclock it and see if that helps your problems.
I think upgrading your computer would be throwing old money after new, with the possible exception of getting a new GPU which you could use in a future...
TBH I dont think waiting and seeing in tech works. The next new thing is /always/ just around the corner so it can be easy to just carry on waiting, especially with the price premium a lot of new tech has. Having said that, an upgrade to a system can be a cost effective way to get more life out...
Ok, one more time then
PSU - Antec Neo Eco
Crucial M4
Corsair XMS3 10666 (1333) 4x4GB RAM
Motherboard - Gigabyte GA Z68MA
Gigabyte GTX560 GPU
Intel I5 2400 - Not going to OC, dont need the 2500k i think, may as well take the extra £20
Hopefully all these links work now....
Upgraded...
I inially thought SSD or RAM issue, but im pretty sure you can probably count RAM out now. With ubuntu you can try getting to a terminal by hitting Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, but you dont really have to. The fact that you are getting to a boot loading screen indicates that there is /probably/ nothing...
While the memory you listed would probably work, it would downgrade the speed automatically to run at 1333, so unless you are going to overclock it there is no point in buying more expensive memory. I would say something like this patriot memory is probably cheaper and would work just as well...
hmm, not quite sure how that happened, throughout the post I have been reffering to Gigabyte GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3 which actually takes the total to £581.52. Sorry about that.
Still, the lack of USB 3 and only the one HDMI port wouldnt be a massive issue so long as i could use it with the main GPU...
Final Build list -
CPU Intel 2500K Retail
Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-Z68-DS3
RAM - Corsair XMS3 16GB Kit
HDD - Crucial M4 64GB - Amazing what you can find when you look, I didnt think anything with Sata 3 would be as cheap as the Intel I originally had. My main concern however is...
I thought they still had to be made by the same manufacturer, Thats pretty cool then, I shouldnt need any more cards. Also explains why I was having trouble finding out what the on-board GPU was.
Thanks for the heads up on the CPU, you have given me food for thought, but now I think I know...
Thanks Danni, Fantastic info
Im not set on over clocking, its more like something I would like the option to do. At the moment its not worth the £30, but in a couple of months I could buy the HSF with no problems. So the question for me was the £10 for CPU alone worth keeping the option open...
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Hosting one virtual machine all the time, and a couple of others occationally. The odd bit of gaming (skyrim and shogun 2 at the moment, im not a big gamer, but i like playing a few select titles, the odds are I will...
