    LSI caching seperate controller

Because then he won't be able to do RAID 5, 6, 10 (if that's what he wants to do). And to the original question: No, you can't cache from a separate controller. Caching with OS or with other software is another story, but then why use HW RAID cards if you want to do that.

Supermicro SC847 host adapters for software raid?

You can use SW RAID in both IT and IR mode, but it's usually recommended to flash it to IT mode as there would be some overhead if you leave it in IR mode. You can either flash from IR to IT, or buy a card that is shipped with IT.

    SE3016 Expander Board Functions/Manual

Do you have pictures of your PSU/fan mod? I believe the ribbon cables are for LEDs only.

Rackable System 3U 16 drives chassis SAS2 upgrade

The PSU looks to be using standard ATX pin out, but it's using a female connector. I think you can swap a new PSU in with a female to female adapter (if there is one), or rewire your own connectors.

Rackable System 3U 16 drives chassis SAS2 upgrade

Got the Intel expander RES2SV240NC new from eBay for $165. Replaced the case fans with Rosewill RFA-80-K for $5/ea. Had the 8087-8088 CBL-0168L cable laying around (maybe $45?). The original 3016 was around $170. So, for around $350 I get a 3U short-depth SAS2 JBOD, why not? By using the Intel...

    Interesting cheap JBODs available

If in IT mode, then it'll show up as single drives. Even in IR, it'll show up as single drives as well, if no RAID was done in the configuration utility.

Rackable System 3U 16 drives chassis SAS2 upgrade

Yes, it's meant for electronics. I use it mostly to prevent it from touching any of the metal parts inside the chassis, but it does avoid static as well.

    Interesting cheap JBODs available

It's gonna be a tight fit with all the cables you need in there. miniSAS cables aren't the most flexible cables out there. Also, you may want to take out the power supply and put in a different one. In the original PSU, there are two 2x2 12+5V and a 24 pin ATX power. There is also a 4x2 (looks...

Rackable System 3U 16 drives chassis SAS2 upgrade

What would be the reason for that? Your house is probably wired with twist caps, too. As long as the connection is tight and secure, I don't see why twist caps are going to cause FAIL.

I found more mylar sheets so I'll be using them to replace the antistatic bag.

I upgraded the chassis to SAS2 with the Intel expander. See my pictures in this post here http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?p=1040637521#post1040637521

Rackable System 3U 16 drives chassis SAS2 upgrade

I upgraded this to SAS2 today with an Intel RES2SV240 SAS2 expander. First, cut off the 12V power cables from the PSU to the expander 2x2 connector, and use the twist cap connector to connect to the 4pin molex cable I have around from dead PSU. Twist cap is quick and convenient. How it looks...

Possible to upgrade Supermicro SC847 to SC847D??

No. Don't even think about it. The internals are completely different.

    Interesting cheap JBODs available

Yes. I went with the Rosewill RFA-80-K 80mm Case Fan. Cheap and actually pretty quiet. For the PSU, I replaced it with Noctua NF-A4x10. Expensive, but worth it. You can't hear a thing!

    Motherboard choice for Fileserver.

If you do go with the X10SL7-F, note that 8 of them are from the onboard LSI 2308 and the other 6 from the PCH. Unless you're going to do JBOD you can't combine all 14 to create one RAID volume.
