    system crashing and need help

I didn't see your answer on whether you use a UPS or not, if you are, maybe that's the culprit. I had my PC plugged into UPS and for a while I had no idea why it would randomly shut down on me over night, over time, shut downs became more and more frequent, and I realized that it's due to the...

    Help! i7 860 combo vs i7 920 combo

I am going against the grain and tell you to go with 860. I get the impression that price is an important factor for you, and you don't make upgrade decision lightly. Let's take away all the talk about 1366 and support for later stuff for a moment, and just talk 860 and 920. Which one is...

Cheap first PC for a kid

agree on used. you never know with kids, they run around, kicking things, like to press shiny buttons (repeatedly), dragging things off the table, knocking things over, spilling things on accident (or so they say). not that we adults don't do that, but kids definitely do it with more purpose...

    Canned air alternative?

Giotto Rocket Bulb sounds good, and cheap, I'll give that a try. i might not have to "borrow" cans from work anymore.

    Help me decide......920 or 860

I just think 3 years is a long time when it comes to PC tech. I don't follow the industry that much so I don't really know what's coming up in the pipelines, but just looking at history and you see how much can change in 3 years. AMD went from AM2 in 2007 to AM2+ to AM3 in 3 years, Intel went...

    Help me decide......920 or 860

I say i7 860. Cheaper combo and lower power consumption. Since performance wise they are essentially the same (860 a bit faster), and you are not going to take advantage of the 1366 features, the biggest thing you gain is the upgradability for the 1366 socket, which means you can theoretically...

    First time building a rig...

FWIW, I have my PC connected to samsung T220HD using HDMI, and it sometimes tells me "no signal" when I switch it on, or switch from wacthing TV to using PC, and I have to cycle the signal inputs to get it to display my desktop. So I think it's worthwhile to give it a try on another monitor.

    Debating on upgrade

It's the SSD, I doubt you can find a new system with a 80GB SSD for $500, so your upgrade is still cheaper.

Want to build a simple everyday use PC than can be upgraded later on for gaming.

If you decided to go DDR3, there are still good AM3 motherboards with onboard video, which will help you stay in budget. For example: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-BIOSTAR-TA785G3-AM3-DDR3-AMD-785G-MATX-Motherboard_W0QQitemZ290405377839QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotherboards?hash=item439d82672f Civ4...

Want to build a simple everyday use PC than can be upgraded later on for gaming.

This combo uses 785G chipset and takes DDR2 - $117: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.334837 Not sure how "later on" later on is, but 785G onboard video is perfectly ok for "Simple everyday use, classwork, web browsing, video playing (maybe up to 720p), video...

What is the most unreliable piece of computer hardware

I've lost a couple HDDs, but the most common hardware failures for me are found on cases: little pieces of plastic snapping off here and there. My current rig has no reset button anymore, for example.

How much is my PC worth? And new build Q's

btw I wouldn't put too much thought on future expendability. there's not much hardware out there that takes advantage of sata3 and usb3, and by the time you wanna expand in the future, it's usually better to get new parts. My 2 cents.

How much is my PC worth? And new build Q's

i5 750 is out long enough that you might be able to get a good deal used. Even at new you can get cpu+mobo+4gb for ~$400, then get a 5xxx ATI for $100ish, PSU for $50 and a 640gb hdd for $50. Right on budget.

Western Digital Live vs. Patriot Box Office

I think you will be fine with either for wired streaming. I got PBO because it's cheaper and plays rmvb. I almost went with WDTV because of the youtube functions and bigger modding community, but in the end PBO for $70 AR and BCB with wireless included was just a better deal.

Rubberband suspension for hard drives? My P150 needs fixing.

Heh, I had the same revelation about 2 years ago when I opened up my p150 and saw my HDDs kinda crumbling on top of one another. I was shocked at first but quickly turned amused because the HDDs were all running great for probably months after the rubber band failed. Anyway, I didn't get the...
