Skylake-Based Z170 Gaming Mini ITX Motherboard

Gave up on the gigabyte board and bought myself an Asrock Z270. Thunderbolt works great. The Ethernet appears to perform better too - download speeds jumped from ~6MB/s to ~12MB/s.

Z170N-Gaming 5 has a new BIOS out - F21. The description for this is "Improves Thunderbolt Capability". Now that got my hopes up. Having flashed it, the "Force TBT Enable" bios option now works again - the Thunderbolt 3 software once again detects that there is a AR 1577 controller. But as they...

barsberge Interesting find, gives hope that more TB3 Mini-ITX boards will come out of the woodwork. Having said that the new Gigabyte Z270 Mini-ITX board (GA-Z270N-WIFI) is also out, but once again that one doesn't have thunderbolt 3, just USB type-c. The ASUS one (ROG Strix Z270I Gaming) also...

odarnoc I can confirm that. The Force TBT option is still there, but it no longer enables the thunderbolt stuff. My guess is that they were experimenting with it in the beta BIOS but had no luck getting it working so gave up. TBH I gave up on it when the beta stuff didn't work.

odarnoc still no luck with the Akitio box. I think it is possibly because there is no PD firmware for it - the firmware update tool only does the NVM firmware. I was half tempted to flash the new firmware for one of the other boards just to see what happens, but would rather not break my...

Alas no thunderbolt support on the Gaming 5. I've tried the Akitio enclosure, but nothing shows up other than the TI USB C/PD IC which shows that the port is only acting as a USB 3.1 Type C connector and not thunderbolt. Nothing shows up in the Thunderbolt attached devices window. Shucks.

brams, do you have a copy of the hacked BIOS? Would be handy if the enclosure doesn't work to try out the modified BIOS.

eltouristo probably will come down a bit - their TBT2 enclosure is $200 though, so not sure how much it will come down. TBT3 licensing ant certification is probably one of the larger costs for all these devices. Though to put it in perspective the Akitio TBT2 enclosure is an awful lot less...

Akitio have released a thunderbolt 3 to PCIe box. Been waiting for something like this to finally be available at a reasonable price (I think this will be a shade under $300). Once somewhere like Amazon picks it up I'm going to buy one and can then finally test if the TBT3 works on the GIgabyte...

limitedaccess The USB3 header on the GA-Z170N is in a bit of an awkward place, but it doesn't really matter that much - its pretty easy to bend the USB3 cable so that it runs neatly out to the edge of the board.

chameleoneel Nice, I'll probably go for that one then. Or just leave it as is for now with the extra stuff disabled. Not as if there is a shortage of HDD space.

chameleoneel The only download I see for the LAN is "BigFoot LAN driver". That's what I installed - it sticks all the Killer stuff on whether you want it or not.

Mannymal I might just do that too. For a while now its been taking 2-3mins for IE or Firefox to load the first time, and pages were 5-10 seconds to load than my old board despite high speed internet. After you mentioned that software, I've just gone and looked at the Killer app (haven't looked a...
