I had to disable Weapon Debris setting or it would CTD eventually. :/ I never ended up playing through FO:NV cuz no matter what I did (even different PC builds) it would randomly CTD to the point it was unplayable. Good old Bethesda.

This is 100% a you problem. Something is obviously broken somewhere. I've never had these issues with Steam. I do agree competition is a good thing though.
