WMR AVX Depends on the game. As mentioned, disabling HT can hurt performance in many games, but the extra overclocking headroom could help in the end.

How far can you push the uncore at your current 1.25v VTT? You should be OK up to 1.35v VTT but I typically try to stay under 1.3v.

That's not to say the other threads are idle and disabling HT will cause more harm than good in many cases, but many games have logic that simply isn't well multithreaded and those few threads will be what brings the FPS down compared to a modern chip (this is especially true of many DX11 and...

Yep, I wouldn't think it would make much sense to pair anything more powerful than a 2070/1080/V64 with Westmere at 4.2-4.6ghz. I know just from testing versus my 1680v2 the x5670 does sit around 15% lower FPS at the same frequency when CPU limited (maxing out one or two threads). Many games...

Penryn (which includes Yorkfield of course) was also usable for quite a long time, but it's usefulness in games for anything but the most low end GPU's has passed. I think Nehalem is nearing the end of it's useful life for gaming, especially with AVX becoming more prevalent (WMR for example...

I'm actually surprised the 930 at 4ghz is that close to the stock 2600k which typically sits at ~3.6ghz all core turbo depending on the board used. A decent Westmere can hit 4.4-4.6ghz which would close the gap significantly but then a good 2600k can hit 4.8-5ghz. It really depends on the game...

Yeah, the Mugen Max, Mugen 5, and Fuma all seem to perform very closely. Any of them should work just fine.

    UEFI BIOS Updates For Spectre

ASUS support is useless. Inquired about my whether updates were planned for my x79 Deluxe and they responded "I have made checks on your motherboard and there are currently no BIOS version that was release for your motherboard, I do apologize for the inconvenience." They didn't even mention...

Recently snagged a GTX 970 to go in my dual x5670 machine. Picked it up for $115, ended up selling the 7950 for $95, seemed like a no brainer. 3DMark result is not bad, I'm sure the single thread performance would bottleneck performance in a lot of games though...

You can boot from PCI-e SSD's but they must support AHCI, so newer SSD's like the 960 Evo will not be bootable and the older SSD's like the 950 Pro don't perform as well. The PCI-e 2.0 will also limit any high speed SSD to around 1700-2000mb/s as the SSD's are limited to four lanes, which isn't...

Yep, the x5670 is still very capable. I only really moved for native NVME, SATA3, and USB3 support. Everything else was quite solid.

Indeed. :) I did recently bench my "new" Xeon: https://www.3dmark.com/fs/15069443 These chips are finally dropping in price for those of use with x79. :)

I have a dual x5670 system at stock. Here's a 3dmark run from a while back: https://www.3dmark.com/fs/13807173 Similar physics score as my old x5670@4.5ghz: https://www.3dmark.com/fs/5596340 I was going to drop my 1080 in there to see how it stacks up to my current system but never got...

So if you say, drop to 3.5ghz or so you then get significantly lower framerates compared to say 4.2ghz? Just because the GPU is dropping to 80% does not necessarily mean you are CPU bound. Well, 1.5v can kill a chip pretty quickly... Maybe within weeks for 24/7 usage, especially at high...
