Nvidia's RT performance gains not as expected?

Welcome to progress with a new technology. There's not a lot of ways around it. Same shit happened with shaders. The GeForce 3 hard programmable shaders but they sucked, and the cards after it grew leaps and bounds in shader capabilities. If a game wanted to hit the shaders hard for effects, it...

Has HDR been standardized already? Is there "HDR Reference Image" ?

Oh it absolutely is... but I don't think Samsung Display cares that much sadly. I think the tech was designed for TVs, computer monitors were an afterthought.

Has HDR been standardized already? Is there "HDR Reference Image" ?

And if you are focused on TVs, which still seems to be the market they really care about it, it really doesn't matter very much. I have an S95B and there is absolutely zero indication that there is any subpixel wackiness when you are looking at it from couch distances. The pixels are just too...

    The Elder Scrolls Online

It varies a lot. It has some drab areas, some lush, some fantasiful, and so on. They did a pretty good job with making the landscape varied so that it isn't just all reskins of the same thing, though they do reuse assets plenty as you'd expect.

Has HDR been standardized already? Is there "HDR Reference Image" ?

One place I've seen that put into great use in the real world, not just some demo, is Resident Evil Village. In the expansion there's a scene with some mannequins with glowing eyes. You see them staring at you down dark hallways and such. It is EXTREMELY creepy and looks great on an OLED TV...

    Portal with RTX

They've thrown a lot of silicon at it. That's why the 4090 is such a toasty beast. Rasterization and general shading did get an uplift as well for sure, but not near as big as the RT uplift. nVidia is betting big on ray tracing as the way forward and the thing to move new GPUs. We'll see how it...

    Portal with RTX

Ya... Full out RT hits hard. We are still a ways off from it really being feasible. I think most games that use it for the near future will do hybrid rasterization with some RT added on because of it. When you go hard, as this appears to, it just smokes even high end GPUs. I'm excited though...

Has HDR been standardized already? Is there "HDR Reference Image" ?

I was just being a goof. Our eyes have no idea what "white" is and change based on environment. They are easily fooled by, well, everything pretty much :P

    x = 0.31271 y = 0.32902 z = 0.35827 :D

The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt: Official Thread

I mean I don't think they are doing that to puff up PC or crap on the consoles, it is just resources. The current gen consoles aren't bad, but they are miderange GPUs at best and they are AMD which doesn't have any ray tracing acceleration so it hits even harder than it would on an nVidia chip...

    27" 240hz OLED Monitor!!! (but there's a catch...)

Ahh gotcha, the earlier post in this thread seemed to imply 200 nits 100% window with ABL/APL disabled. That would also work for me (115 nits in my case) but ya, I can see people running in to cases where they want more. I run about 160nits at work, last time I measured, because the room is...

    27" 240hz OLED Monitor!!! (but there's a catch...)

That's saying "I want to ignore objective data because it doesn't confirm my feelings." Photons are photons to your eyes, there are not some magic photons that the CRT emits that other displays don't that look brighter, despite being the same level. So, if 100nits on a CRT is a brightness level...

    27" 240hz OLED Monitor!!! (but there's a catch...)

Then please quote the measured luminance spec at 100% window. Back when I did CRTs (Lacie Electron22Blue IV) I calibrated it to about 80 nits. Pushed too high, and you'd get blur as the beam leaked to surrounding phosphors. That sounds like what I'd expect, particularly given they are older...

    Portal with RTX

If you like puzzle games, I think you'll enjoy them. Valve put a LOT of time into playtesting the puzzles so they don't leave you out in the cold working them out (they have a behind the scenes mode where they explain a lot of that). If it was just the puzzles, it'd be a good game, however the...

    27" 240hz OLED Monitor!!! (but there's a catch...)

I would also argue that for most desktop usage, that is plenty. If you like a very bright room maybe not, but if you can control your light level you probably don't want it eye-searingly bright all the time. It's going to depend on your room and your preference, but even in a normally lit room...
