    Yes, for big rigs its called IFTA. Truckers/Trucking companies used to have to do it using paper but now its part of the ELog/ELD package that tracks it for them. Scary thing is that the tracking is already built into newer cars to do it.

    From the closet where the media converter is at to the switch in the server room. Don't need 50 feet, you just need the electrical separation. I would probably do 10 feet at a min.

    Here is what I did: Existing buried cat5e can not be replaced easily because it goes under a slab. Media converter on a APC ups on both ends, 50 feet of fiber to a fiber switch port or another media converter on both ends. Any strike at most kills the media converters and maybe the 2 ups...

    disk and tape and worm optical copies in multiple locations with check sums and copied to new media often. 3 copies min. Unless shocked while reading/writing its the electronics or electro-mechanical parts that will most likely fail not the platters and be recoverable.
