Yes, with v6 you do. It was a bug introduced with Nvidia drivers a believe and it never got worked around on v6, just V7.

Was it running a GPU as console or as a service that no longer worked in Vista and above? I can't remember. Might be the issue.

a 670 should be plenty for 1920x1200. At that res memory isn't much of an issue unless your doing hella modding like in Skyrim or playing Max Payne. I think you can snag some 670's for around $350, maybe lower with good deals.

My train of thought is the faster and more the beta team gets them to test, the faster they get to advanced and regular fah and then everyone can enjoy the love :)
