The most I've tried at the same time is 8: all 6 on-board sata ports and 2 IDE drives. Worked flawlessly!

Newer versions of Parted Magic support multiple internal-secure-erase, and secure erase is nice because it can wipe bad sectors as well.

I think spanning and pooling are getting mixed together. Spanning is like Raid 0, where 1 file will be spread across 2 or more disks. Pooling means 1 drive letter or mount point for 2 or more drives. @securitux On freenas 9S (9898) that I'm running, if I enabled SMB2 and AIO transfers together, it would crash and cause problems, but if I change it from SMB2 to NT1, AIO can remain enabled. In my testing though, SMB2 with AIO off performed the best.
