    With PCI-E 3.0 enabled in the motherboard, the nvidia (nvlddmkm) keeps crashing over and over in games, resulting in a black screen and some freezing then continuing on like normal. Reverting to 2.0 or 1.1 solves it. No driver rollbacks, registry hacks or downclocking seems to solve the problem...

    are you talking about tdp? it's because they usually rate a series of processors as the same tdp, it's a lot easier with support, motherboard guidelines, coolers and other things.

    670s really doesn't draw that much more power than 6850. Should be safe unless you voltage modify the 670s and run them to the max. To assure you further, this test system runs a i7 3960X @ 4,0 GHz (which draws more than your cpu) and it just about peaks 500w.
