I am not sure how to check if VLC is offloading the video decoding to the video card.
When I'm idle I'm using below 5% on all cores, and when I'm playing the movie all cores are around 20-30%, so none of them are maxing out... Is there any reason I should install SMPlayer?
I'm not sure...
I didn't explicitly install any new codecs on this system, just VLC player, if that's my issue is there a pack of standard codecs that I should install?
I built a desktop at the beginning of this year and have recently come across a few problems concerning my display and was hoping someone here could give me some advice. When I'm trying to play movies that are "higher quality" (example: a 100 movie in 1920x1200 resolution, file size ~9GB) lag...

So I recently built a computer, and set it up with two Samsung Spinpoint 1TB Hard Drives in a RAID 1 array. Ever since my install I've noticed an ever growing amount of unaccounted space in the Local Disk C: Properties' pie chart. After just installing the OS, which should have been ~16GB it...
So reading the manual goes a long way... and since I only installed my OS yesterday I decided there wasn't any real reason not to just start over and reinstall.
My new question, is how to I check to ensure my hardware RAID1 array is working properly? I've got two HDDs plugged into my mobo...
So I just recently built a desktop for the first time, and I feel like I may have made a mistake. My initial plan was to buy two hard drives and set them up in a RAID1 array so I didn't have to worry about backing up data. When I was building the machine I thought, "well I'll just plug in one...
Tiraides, thank for the awesome advice. I will probably take you up on the RAM and PSU suggestion to save some money, and use that money for a beefier GPU.
The PSU and the RAM were things that a friend pointed me toward, if they're way overkill I won't bother with them, and will tone them both down, probably to what you had initially suggested.
I'm getting the monitor from the Lenovo website, with my IBM employee discount...
I will look into...
So here's what I've got so far. Any additional comments are still extremely welcome, I've been taking advice from a handful of websites/friends/coworkers, so if you made a suggestion that wasn't taken to heart, I'm not trying to ignore you, and if you feel a previous suggestion is still...
I shifted to a G.Skill DDR2 800 kit with marginally better cas latency than the one you suggested, but I'm glad someone pointed out that "high performance RAM" wasn't useful with a Core 2 I didn't plan on overclocking.
The amount of PC gaming I have done recently has been minimal, but part of...
I've been told by some people that my choice of PSU is not the best. One person said I need a 650W PSU, two other people said they just didn't like Thermaltake. Considering a SILVERSTONE ST70F 700W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply, any...
