    Do you have the ac adapter connected while testing? Make sure that the cpu is not clocking back its speed because it does not have ac power.

    One of the other comments were correct, you can run this as a 220v setup but mak see a shorter psu life cycle because of the actual freq differences. I would stick with 120v.

    Have you tried running the cooler fan off of a separate fan controller? I generally have better results and can max the fan out when I want to. If you pair it with a server style fan, your machine will cool were effectively.

    boot into windows and plug the drive in. Run a check disk on it and see if it drops out while you are running it.

    Go with the USB stick.....that drive is on the edge of failure.

    tape is horrible...and slow, If you have the cash get a raid controller with external ports and go that route. I have also had a lot of luck with USB 3 devices from i\o safe. The are fire and water resistant...so I keep them in a safe.
