Thanks for the opinions.
See, this shows I'm out of the loop. I wasn't even considering an Intel build because the last time I looked, (x58 i7-920 days)
it seemed that an Intel build was going to be quite a bit more expensive than an AMD build. (Also, my budget was a bit more limited then.)...
Hi [H],
Its been about 3 years since Ive had a desktop. Last machine was a phenom 945. The motherboard died and took the video card with it. Sold it for parts and bought a laptop. Now Ive got the cash to upgrade back up to a desktop.
First, the Q&A section.
1) What will you be doing...
The Grado 225's (and all of the grado phones to an extent) have a couple things in common.
First, they have long cords. (~8 feet) This is easily taken care of with a twist tie or something, but is still something to be aware of in case long cords bug you, or you are planning to use these on...
Just as a note, Beyerdynamic DT 880's are not closed. They are 'semi closed'. They leak quite a bit in and out. I.E. not something you would want to listen to in a library. However, they are amazing for classical vocal music. If you don't mind a light, tight bass line they can serve for rock...
I own the Norco RPC-450B (the Norco 450 in black) and have a few things to say about it.
No documentation
Pretty heavy. Seems to be solid enough. It's not a supermicro, but it's not horrible.
Plastic handles in front, be careful if lifting.
Drive bays are not hot swap. and are...
It locks up, but it locks up long enough that I can tell that it's not doing anything anymore (ie overnight 8-10 hours.)
I try to split up animations when I can, but some things, like trying to do cloth simulation is difficult to split up.

Hi,
I have a ASUS G72GX Laptop, and like to work with animation as a hobby. Poser (http://poser8.smithmicro.com/dr/index.html) is my tool of choice, and is a simplified/entry level posing/animation tool.
I am having problems with rendering animated scenes on my laptop.
Whenever I try to...

Took a look at that, and am not sure how well that would work. My program will only take advantage of up to 4 cores, so building a machine with more than 4 doesn't seem like a good use of resources. There is virtualization, but I'm not sure how well that works when dealing with...

I am currently running a MSI AM2+ microatx board

It looks like this chip (AMD Phenom II 940 @3.0Ghz) would work in the board I currently have.

Yes, I can upgrade to a network render for a bit of money.

That's just what I was looking at. For about $1400 I could build 2 Phenom II x4 systems (AM2+) @ 3Ghz w 4GB of Ram. I think those, plus my Phenom 9550 @2.2 Ghz would outrun an i7 plus my phenom.
12 cores, 12GB Ram...
Thanks for the replies.
Kinda what I thought would end up happening. From what I've seen the i7 is a bit faster than the PII, which is itself at least a bit faster than the PI.
So, i7 it is, then.
Do you think it is worth saving up and dropping in a PII chip into my current system in...
Hi,
I've got a laptop I use for 3d rendering, and I am unhappy with the heat it puts out, and am afraid it will fail like my last one did. So, I am thinking about selling it, and using the funds from that to build a new desktop.
I will be using this machine pretty much only for 3d...
The Ergotron Neoflex stand isn't horribly expensive, and supports up to a 24" monitor.
It's $45 at the egg.

Or, if you want a desk mounted stand, there is the Ergotron Neoflex LCD Arm for $75.
Supports up to a 22" lcd. (I...
