wingfat: As a novice, I can't really appreciate the differences between unix and linux. From where I sit, they seem to have near identical commands. But it is good to know that I made a good choice.
Take care.
Freak1: Being a total newbie, I asked this forum not more than one month ago which O/S to use. If I remember, I think it was danswartz who suggested not to use NexentaStor as their were stability problems with it. So I simply took his advise and choose OpenIndiana as he recommended.
My...
Freak1: This is the problem you have when you are not experienced enough! This time I will enter the ip address (given by DHCP) for the server. Thanks
DieTa: 1) I will do this but just wondering why? I was thinking that the 1st time I entered sudo passwd root and my new root password...
Installed OpenIndiana on boot drive. Gave the user a username "rst" and passwd "rst". Opened terminal. Issued sudo passwd root and entered a new root password. Then
wget -O - www.napp-it.org/nappit | perl. After napp-it successful completion, I was warned to re-enter root password with...
Ok. It looks like this is much simpler than I imagined. Sorry if I made this out to be harder than it really was
I will start and install napp-it this weekend. Then set up my pool and then my filesystem hierarchy. After than I hope to use my Windows7 workstation, get it connected to the...
Schnell: Feeling kinda stupid. I don't know why I didn't think of this!
Gea: What I am unsure about is how to be prepared when any one of these disks turn defective. When the O/S reports which drive was the culprit, how do I identify which physical disk ie does the O/S report /dev/c1t5d0 or...
Motherboard: Supermicro X8DT3-F with SAS ports connected to 8 drives
This is still my 1st time installing OpenIndiana and with Linux in general.
I have 8 new Hitachi 5k3000 2TB drives shown with the format command (in terminal) as follows:
c1t0d0 c1t1d0 c1t2d0 c1t3d0 c1t4d0 c1t5d0 c1t6d0...
That is good reasons to use the Live version. First I must make sure that I have installed the IT bios. After I confirm and install the IT bios, I will proceed with the OI live "Install OpenIndiana". Thanks
a) Previously, I believed that the jumper switch on my motherboard changed the bios from IT mode to Raid mode and that the default shipped bios was setup in IT mode. If the jumper doesn't do this, I am not sure why the jumper is actually for.
I didn't realize that I need to reflash the bios...
First My Server Hardware:
Supermicro X8DT3-F motherboard
-12gig ecc un-buffered Kingston KVR1333D3E9SK3/6G
-Intel Quad Xeon 2ghz E5506 (may add a 2nd cpu later if needed)
-two-320gig (all 7200rpm server grade) drives to be set up for zfs mirrored boot drives connected on the regular sata...
danswartz: Just to make sure that I understand your advice. You get approx. 1/3 of the max speed of a theoretical gig network speed (eg approx 35MB/s) or 3x max speed of a gig network (eg. approx 300MB/s) when reading large files? And what happens when your reading small files?
PigLover: I...
What I wanted was to use ZFS software raid1 on the two boot drives. For data, if I add the extra 2TB drive and do a raidz2, I understand that this would increase data safety. But would it also affect my performance compared to keeping just one copy of the data with raidz? I plan to do large...
I will wait until Nexentastor has fixed their issues. Thanks for the suggestion. I have just downloaded OI & will try to install sometime this weekend.
If I raid1 the two 320G boot drives instead of mirroring them, does this help performance alot?
Since I have almost 10TB of data drives...
