    I gained 17% PPD going from Windows 7 to Native Ubuntu/Linux Mint, gains in VM are similar around 15% Ive heard. Ive got a similar setup to you, I had my 2600k @4.8 but after 2-3 days 24/7 folding I got a lockup, down to 4.7 and has been 24/7 for a few weeks now. Getting around 40,000ppd in Linux.

    I was running 10.04 with no issues then foolishly "upgraded" to 11.10, it was nothing but frustration. I am a novice Linux user but 11.10 is much more difficult for me to get around, I went back to 10.04 and have mint downloading.
