If anyone knows of a hacky way to lower the peak brightness in HDR mode I'll do anything.

Frametime is a much more meaningful metric than framerate. 60 to 120 is a massive 8.33ms improvement, 120 to 144 is only 1.39ms. 120 also has the benefit of being divisible by 30 for YouTube and other Web video content.

Is there a way to reduce HDR backlight strength, similar to a TV? It's too much for me at night in a dark room.

I switched to HDR always on to see how it goes. So far the dimming zone effect is less annoying than oversaturation in Windows and applying Reshade for every game. This might be the ticket.

Exactly, enabling HDR fixes sRGB but then you have to control brightness with the HDR/SDR balance slider and tolerate the diming zones doing their thing.

You might get a kick out of this - I'm using my ancient TRUE 120 (Opteron 170 days) and it keeps it under well under 60C in games and ~70-75C in RealBench. Gotta love soldered 22nm. Thermalright sent me a 2011 bracket for free. I could probably get away with 4.6 on air without running torture...

Still rocking the 5820k. It can do 4.2 GHz @ 1.1v, 4.4 GHz @ 1.2v, 4.5 GHz @ 1.25v. It beats or matches Ryzen 2000 series in games.
