Well, I took the card back to the store today and had the store's tech install it in a pc there and run 3dmark demos to test it. The card itself is fine - so it just doesn't get along with my motherboard. I bought a BFG Geforce FX 5500 OC to replace it. I popped it in and it worked...
I am definitely entertaining the possibility of a bad card.
However - I am wondering if the fact that my mobo only supports 4x AGP could be a contributing factor. I am able to get the dxdiag direct3d test to run, but there is visual artifacting still.
