rediornot

I was in the USAF for 23 year 4 months and 12 day and retired as a Master sergeant. 1971 I was punching 0s and 1s on paper tape and locking in a briefcase to take back to my base to be entered in the base computer that filled a 20,000 square foot building that had to be maintained at 70F to keep the reel to reel decks of magnetic tape drives that were the computer then. The spools feed through a machine that shone light through the holes onto magnetic tape that the computer could read.
In 1978 I used a TI-51 scientific calculator to with magnetic tapes that programed the calculator to process flight data for B-52s and KC-135s at Castle AFB. We later switched to a Hewlett-Pacard programmable calculator.
One of the flight simulator technicians was pretty good at computer coding and converted our program to be run on the flight simulator. We were issued our own 100mb hard drive that weighed about 40 lbs. we had to set it on top of the drive reader that was waist high and twist it 90 degrees to lock it into the Harris mainframe computer
in 1980 we got our first desktop computer, a Sunstrand all in one double 5 1/4" floppy drive. One to program the computer and one to save our data, built in keyboard and 12 " CRT monitor. All commands in MS DOs.
1983 at RAF Bentwaters I taught an A-10 warthog engine run class and we were allowed to use the flight simulator 1 day per week to practice emergency procedures. The building was 3 stories high and had a halon extinguisher system. 1 minute to get out before the halon displaced all of the O2.
the computer I am typing on now is more powerful than all of those combined.
Look how far we have come!
