What do you prefer for 4K PC and Console Gaming on your desk? 32" or 40-43"?

I'm currently looking to augment or replace my current 2x24" Dell UltraSharps with a 4K HDR monitor. Primarily I'll be doing PC work for development and drafting, but would also like to do some light console gaming in HDR as well. Eventually I'll be setting up a home theater with likely an OLED...

    The Steam Machine is Dead

The hardware aside, I really liked SteamOS. I picked up a relatively cheap Dell/Alienware Steam Machine and played through several games with an Xbox controller on a TV. Worked great, even if the graphic quality wasn't fantastic. For games that could completely use the controller, it made a...

    Looking for a short-depth 2U NAS case

What did you end up going with? Or, what would you if there weren't APO shipping issues? I might replicate your setup.

Video Released of Uber Self-Driving Car Accident

I'd be curious to hear why Uber's technology didn't detect the person. Would Tesla's technology have been able to work better in this case? Based on the video, I'm not convinced the driver would have had enough time to react even if they had been paying attention. I've driven before and come...

    Looking for a short-depth 2U NAS case

I've looked for a setup exactly like that, although I have a micro-ATX board instead of mini-ITX. Never found quite what I was looking for. You get some better options if you go with 3U, plus easier to use standard components (PSU, expansion cards). What I ended up doing was find a 3U case with...

No, Valve is not killing SteamOS or the Steam controller.

Well, that's the downside to the Alpha. I bumped the RAM to 12GB I think.... there was one slot available? I forget exactly. Otherwise, the CPU and GPU weren't upgradeable. Also put in an SSD instead of the HDD. I think there are newer versions of the Alpha that are more powerful. For me, I was...

No, Valve is not killing SteamOS or the Steam controller.

I had an Alienware Alpha some months back that came with Windows & Steam, but I wiped it to just install Steam OS. It worked great, especially with a Xbox 360 wireless controller. Didn't play everything in my library, but it was fantastic for the stuff it did. It was my system of choice for...

How much CPU power do I really need for ZFS

If you need better performance, increase your RAM. If you're doing VM traffic, you should do mirrored pairs. After that, if you still have performance issues, then L2ARC might make sense. Of course, a SLOG would be worthwhile too.

NAS set up, Hardware RAID vs FreeNAS (or NAS4Free)

Can't hurt to try out FreeNAS on your existing setup. Eventually you'll want to upgrade.... but that never changes! If you do decide to buy a controller, the IBM M1015 is a solid choice. That's one item that's come with me through several upgrades. When you do upgrade, I highly recommend getting...

    Raid Card or ZFS?

I don't know if those CPUs will pass-through the HBA. You need VT-d extensions, but from looking at the Intel spec page I just see VT-x. So, you'd need a new setup if you wanted to run FreeNAS as a VM to pass through a controller. And yes, ESXi is a VM "hypervisor" letting you install multiple...

    Raid Card or ZFS?

For my setup I'm running ESXi, so I can run multiple VMs, FreeNAS w/ Plex being one of them. My motherboard has IPMI, so I can remote in and turn everything on/off if needed. With a VPN on my router, I always have remote access. In your case, you could easily run a second VM for Windows...

    Raid Card or ZFS?

You should really look into FreeNAS. I'm running it as a VM on a Xeon server w/ ECC memory, but it works just as well on bare metal. You can use FreeNAS to create "jails", which are basically mini-VMs, to run apps like Plex, SABnzbd, Sonarr, etc. Aside from setting up your network, you never...

    Raid Card or ZFS?

I've been using ZFS in various forms for years, wouldn't consider anything else. Try FreeNAS if you want a storage appliance. Gets you a nice GUI where you can set everything up, including Windows (SMB) shares. I've moved my data pool between multiple systems including new motherboards/CPUs...
