Clevo makes frames for Sager, Alienware, WidowPC, and a few others you have probably heard of that escape me right now.
If you go that route, check all the Clevo Clone sites to get the best deal.
Its easy. Sign up to get the Employee Purchase Program (EPP) emails (its not too hard to align yourself with one of the EPP's somehow), then keep an eye out for the 33% off coupons.
EPP's get 12% off, and the 33% is taken off after that, which basically means you get 42% off of the retail...
Play the Dell Coupon game, I got a FULLY loaded XPS-2 (P-M2.13, 100GB 5400rpm HD, 2GB mem, DVD, bluetooth, WIFI, shield insert, etc) for about $2700.
Some guys got scaled down versions for just over $1500.
I dont think so, the price is still up there but they offer so many features now it makes up the difference. The Etrex series can be had for well under $150 if you look. I think the GPSMAP60 was about $279 or so, but considering the features I think its worth it.
To each his own. My 2...
I have the legend and it suits my needs. However, I really think the etrex line, with internal antennas, would not be that good in an area with lots of tree cover.
I think if the GPSMAP 60 was available when I got mine over 2 years ago I would have gotten it instead. Without reception a GPS...
I got a Garmin Etrex and bought a cable to connect to the laptop. WOrks like a champ, and if you decide to leave the lappy at home you have a good GPS box to carry out on the trail.
Had mine for 3 days now. I had to call to get Dell to send me the XP Media Center Edition System DVD (yes, DVD), but other than that it is as advertised.
Some general observations:
My keyboard is solid, I forget which one is which but mine does not have the rivets.
LG screen and I...
Have you tried other disks? I know some CD-R's I create on one of my desktops can not be read by the regular reader in that same desktop.
DVD isnt involved, but sometimes CD-R's can be cut for general use or specifically for the writer they are cut on. Most computers can still read them but...
Actually Clevo Clones (Sager, Alienware, etc) have SATA and PCI-E already.
Im looking cause I like to game and travel an awful lot, and my current alptop doenst play well with DX9. :(
The 6800 "Down Clocked" issue is the video bios shipped is NOT the same bios that was tested by the various review sites, and the new one is slower. It has been confirmed Tom's Hardware lists the Bios they tested, and its not the same one as Dragon or others got.
Still, 4800+ isnt bad when...
A coworker just got a HP ZD8000 series he custom built at HP, it had the x600 with 256MB on it, and I think it was about $1600. Not in the class of the Sager/Dell XPS 2/Dell 9300, but a very nice computer for the cash.
But if you want a deal, get a Dell 9300 with the 35% off coupons that are...
The one Dragon just listed has one great feature though. You slip your laptop into it, then you can put it in other bags to carry around. Any backpack, suitcase, carry on, etc that it fits into can become a laptop carry case.
He he true, Targus makes good stuff, I saw the Victorinox and liked it, and wife got it for me for my birthday. Didnt have the heart to tell her I wanted a Targus roller (only $90 or so) cause she always gets me the wrong stuff. At least this time its useful. :D
