Damn you guys (or girls) are good!
Two new apps for me to investigate and a possible suggestion with SyncBack. Great stuff.
Now I will do a deeper dive and see what I find.
Thanks so much.
I am looking for backup tool that lets me keep a rolling backup of the last 30 days (or so) of my WHS folders. I have an internal drive that is not part of the pool and I backup the folder shares every night.
I have tried Acronis 2012 incremental & differential, Syncback, and the built in...
I am looking for a good folder backup utility that works like WHS.
Specifically, WHS does incremental backups every night, and keeps N of them. All I have to do to recover a file from 3 months ago is to go into the WHS Console, highlight the date in the backup list, and then click "Open..."...
About every 3rd or 4th time I put a Handbrake encoded video up on the WHS server in the Video folder, it does not show up in the PS3 directory list.
I navigate to the directory (using the lame DOS like folder view), and the .mp4 file is not listed.
My W7 PC sees the directory and all the...
HTPC is by far the most flexible and capable approach. Lots of software, updates, cool GUI's, etc. But it is not the cheapest solution, nor is it very "turn key" yet.
If using an HTPC, keep all the video files from the rip and use PowerDVD or equivalent to playback the files. Will work just...

That is EXACTLY my feeling about it. Good quality video, embedded captioning, 6 channel audio, everything I can do to make the videos top notch, but actually picking one to watch via the PS3 interface is getting lamer (more lame?) as the number of vids grow.
Similarly, with the...
Well hell.
Since it was DLNA compliant, I figured it would do something a little better than a basic DOS list. Maybe some setting or 3rd party stack on the WHS.
Thanks for that info.
On the bright side, now I have an excuse to make an HTPC and use a nice skin, like XBMC.
Setup is WHS in office, PS3 in video room connected via CAT6. Lots of Handbrake encoded videos on WHS. The PS3 sees them all and they play great.
But... the PS3 interface SUCKS when browsing the videos up on the server. All I have is a folder view and then it gives me a text list of the files...
Question
How did you get the failed drive out of the pool since the console remove would not work?
Depending on how you did that, you could definitely have some issues.
Thx for the comments.
I know it is not a true backup solution, but for the networked PC's, it really is. Automated nightly, full image backups. Even the ability to roll back or recover files from a year ago. All automagically. Very nice.
Now, if MS could just provide that same level of roll...
After inadvertently deleting a folder from my WHS Video share, I am having second thoughts about my backup strategy with WHS. I really like the Folder Duplication feature for a simple fault tolerance design, but I was not thinking about accidental deletions. And with the family all using those...
Agree with other posts, DE is THE big feature of WHS.
People that say "Just use RAID" are not thinking it through. Part of the beauty of DE was how stupid it was. The files were just stored twice. There was no single point failure that would make you lose your data short of a massive power...

Thx for the info.
Definitely NOT what I want. I know it is not very space efficient, but I always put the album artwork in the file. That makes the MP3 fully standalone. I can move it to another machine, another account, or whatever.
