I would strongly suggest you look at quad-G34 systems. You can usually get a Supermicro H8QGI for around $700-800, with four CPU sockets and 32 DIMM slots. Opteron 8-core 6128's are very cheap, or you can upgrade to a higher model. There is even one auction now going on for a combo with 4*12C...
