How often do you upgrade your main display?

    1999 - 15" CRT 2002 - Samsung SyncMaster 955DF (or similar model), 19" CRT, up to 1280x1024 80Hz 2005 - Dell 2405FPW, 24" PVA panel, 1920x1200 60Hz 2015 - Philips BDM4065UC, 40" VA panel, 3840x2160 60Hz ^ I use this currently for work 2019 - LG C9, 65" OLED, 3840x2160 60Hz (could do 120Hz...

Big TV as a Monitor for GMA?

Any big TV is fine. Make sure to enable game mode in the TV settings, to avoid any image processing which increases latency and makes the mouse harder to use.

    42" OLED MASTER THREAD

The center speaker stand used to be high enough for the previous 40" monitor on that desk, so that the speaker was above the monitor. That arrangement had some scalability problems for 65". 😁 (I did a complete reorganization a couple days later and bought a normal TV table and a shorter center...

    42" OLED MASTER THREAD

For me, 40" 16:9 (max 42") is the sweet spot. You can see anywhere on the screen by turning your head less than 20 degrees. 4K at 100% scale. I tried 65" on the desktop once, but it wasn't practical: (65" is good from the couch 2m away, 4K at 200% scaling.)

1080p -> 4K gives four times more screen real estate. 4K -> 8K gives sharper text.

    4k vs uhd

RE7 was not originally designed for VR, so avoiding motion sickness was not designed into the game mechanics from the beginning. RE7 doesn't even use motion controllers, right? Resident Evil Village, on the other hand, looks like a proper VR port. Games that have been designed for VR have...

+1 that. The Philips is limited to 4K at 60Hz (DisplayPort 1.2) or 30Hz (HDMI 1.4), whereas LG OLEDs can do 4K at 120Hz (HDMI 2.1). Picture quality is also better. OLED's non-RGB pixel layout might be an issue to some, but in that case you could choose some LCD monitor in the same size category.

    42" OLED MASTER THREAD

Living in Finland might have an effect. The temperature never goes over 30°C and a third of the year it's freezing (inside it's about 20°C). Or then those whose monitors burned up are the most vocal in forums. Anyways, that monitor has a design problem and/or bad components. Some extra...

    42" OLED MASTER THREAD

I've had LG C9 65" now for 3 years, about 8 hours daily use (web browsing, videos, games). OLED brightness is normally about 20%, but for movies I turn it up to 60-80%. I keep the Windows task bar visible. I've only changed Windows to use dark mode and have a nearly black background image. No...

    42" OLED MASTER THREAD

I hope PG42UQ will work at 4K 120Hz on a Macbook Pro. (I'm after smoother mouse movement on the deskop; games don't matter on Mac.) Macs have lousy support for high resolution and refresh rate, and for example the LG OLED TVs only run at 60Hz: https://tonsky.me/blog/monitors-mac/ Might be due to...

    42" OLED MASTER THREAD

So many promising displays, finally. 🥰 The time to upgrade from my trusty old Philips BDM4065UC (whose top-row backlight LEDs are occasionally flickering but not yet burned out) is approaching. Maybe Q4 this year. I'm especially curious about the upcoming QD-OLED panels, since they should be...

    OLED Eye Fatigue

I'm running my LG C9 65" using 60% OLED LIGHT setting, and most of the time I also set Energy Saving to Medium, to make it still dimmer in the evenings. I use the OLED TV as a PC monitor, mostly for web browsing and watching videos, and too much brigthness burns my eyes. For dark/low contrast...

    CRT vs LCD vs eyesight?

I've always had a normal right eye and near-sighted left eye. I was okay without glasses when I was small. Then I got into computers around 1999 (at first 15" CRT and then 19" CRT) and soon noticed that after some while on the computer I would instinctively lean closer toward the screen - like...

    40" 5120x2160 LG panel in Q1 2021

Interesting. 39.7" at 21:9 screen ratio means 93x39cm screen area, whereas 39.7" at 16:9 ratio means 88x49cm screen area. I might accept trading 10cm height for 5cm width and higher DPI. Anyways I seldom have important stuff at the top 7cm. My window arrangement is a text editor/IDE in the...
