    IBM drives suck IMO even though they are made by HP. We average 10-12 months on our LTO 2 drives before they take a dump. Not so good considering the price. Our SDLT 320 drives seem to last though.

    How does array expansion work with Windows?

    Windows will see the additional space but will only let you create another partition. However, you can use the diskpart CLI tool to extend the exisiting partition. diskpart is part of 2003 and XP, not sure about 2000.

    It refers to the number of wires, not pins. They are both 40 pin but the later has 80 wires which offers additional grounding(shielding).

    WOW 20+ hours?!?!?!?! I take it your running a software RAID 5? I have a terabyte with about 655 gig of data on it. I yanked a drive and slid a new one in to check rebuild times, it was done 3 hours and some seconds.

    If the card supports OCE you can swap the drives out one at a time with larger ones to expand the array.

    question about software raid5 (windows server 2003)

    I ran a software RAID 5 under 2003 until I bought the Areca card. It worked but it is SLOW! Don't expect any over 5MB/s sustained and 7MB/s burst transfers. If your looking to stay on the cheap IMO I would at least still pop a few bills for an LSI or broadcom card that is host based.
