I'm the same way with some game. I like to play my fps games with my mouse and keyboard at hi-res, and I hook up my tv to my pc and use my 360 controller for action adventure games. I feel like games that require exploration and are big in scope require a lare tv to enjoy them :p
Absolutely the one thing in your system you don't want to skimp out on quality is your power supply. I always make sure to get highly rated and overcompensate the amount of power I need for my computer.
1440p is awesome. I went from 1680x1050 to 1440p so you might not notice as much difference as I did, but it will still be a pretty good change. A single 780 Ti will last quite some time especially if you overclock it. If you feel you need more performance down the road you can always toss...
