i agree that its old and theres no reason to try to use it in production, it is EOL, but if its cheap, its alot cheaper then trying to buy a 3560 or something to get a good layer3 switch for a lab, and a 4006 wont draw that much power if its not loaded, you dont need 3 psu's to get it going at...
you can run 3 diff sup's in it that will run ios sup2+ sup3 sup4, and you can do gig on it, just get a 4448 line card, you just cant do POE on a cat4k chassis with out the external shelf, whats wrong with the cat4k's? we still have a handful (8 or 10) of them running in production that we havent...
for me, learning and cert practice and proof of concept. i shut it off when im not using it to save electricity and money in the end, i dont use mine as much as id like now, but i plan to start studying for ccie later this year so it will get much more use then.
ok, so i havent gotten around to taking any pictures yet, but i do have some more insight and thoughts on what im going to do, besides keep looking for memory, hoping to find a few more 2gb sticks of memory so that i can get the servers up to 16gb each, if not ill stick with the 12 or 14 gig i...
yup...thats actually in our bedroom behind the door :) its all lab so its only on when im using it so its not that bad, my kid is 3 and lights and buttons are amusing to him so i could never put it in there, he has figured out how the power switch on the 6500 power supply works and that when he...
ill have to take some pictures and post em up...the servers are sitting in my kitchen against the wall right now, i need to figure out where they're going since my rack is full and i haven't found the rails for them yet...im not in a huge rush to get em in since i still haven't found a way to...
i havent really had a chance to start playing with it yet, i can get my way through an esx install and virtual center and understand it but i dont know a ton about the vmware stuff, just enough to get by, we have a server group that does the vm stuff so i dont get to touch it that much and id...
wife and kid will e hearing them, but they wont be on all the time only when im playing with them :) most running Cisco UC apps
They wont be much louder than my 6500 ;) They are 64-bit, i checked before i lugged them home, i was thinking maybe pickup an MDS off ebay and a cheap SAN if i really...
so i scored a few decent hp servers out of the recycle pile in the datacenter at work, theyre hp dl380 g5's, dual 3.0ghz dual-core procs in each, total of 24gb of memory between the two(can probably find more over the next few weeks, maybe get them up to 16gb each), each have 2x 36gb and 3x 72gb...
I so need an office...my lab is in our bedroom behind the door, off unless im using it...no one wants to sleep listening to a 6500 roaring...and my home network is under a hutch in the living room for the time being :)
I agree that top of rack switch with uplinks to distro is much neater for cables then the patch panels, and over time can be cheaper, my company has 2 not so small data center's, up until about 3 months ago there were patch panels above every rack and home runs back to the access switches, to...
nexus's are always nice to see :) i posted a pair of 7k's up a few pages back...nice to see others are starting to use them...were up to 2 7k's 4 5k's a few dozen 2248's a few 2232's (10 gig fex) and we just signed a new contract with vmware for enterprise + 1000v so there will be a BIG 1000v...
