ZFS is a file-system and a RAID engine. You don't use hardware RAID with it if you want the best performance. It's a really advanced file system that's very scalable. I'll cover what I know (the basics) but for more about it, you should check out sub.mesa's ZFSGuru post.
RAID-Z works like...
Thanks for your reply _Gea. I was kind of waiting for one of the ZFS gurus to pop in and help me decipher that. Yeah, I already know about OpenSolaris closing up shop so I was planning to go with Solaris Express 11 to run ZFS. Right now, the biggest problem I have with my setup is to make...
Some day it won't be Top ;). Right now the budget for the project hasn't been approved by the powers that be, so I'm going to have to start small and work my way up there. No way am I going to be able to afford 3TB drives from the get-go either. But if I get lucky enough, I'll have quite a few...
MS is putting out a public preview for WHSv2 this month. Maybe we'll see a solution to the removal of DE that Redmond has been keeping under wraps...or something to make up for this shortcoming.
And yeah, from the sounds of it WHSv2 is going to have RAID solutions of some kind from OEMs like...
I gave it a passing glance - I don't have any hardware that I'd be "recycling" into this project otherwise it would be a contender for sure. The only downside is the drive limit in the pro version. 21 isn't very much and I can see me having this server for a while.
Got any that you can...
I had a similar setup (2x1TB Caviar Black RAID0) before I went to to my SSD. I can tell you it's a night and day difference. So much so that I get impatient when using systems that don't have one.
I don't know what you're looking for in performance, but I've got my OS on a SandForce-based...
Doing some more rounds of research on the web, came across this - http://hub.opensolaris.org/bin/view/User+Group+qosug/zfs_iscsi_integration
Seems plausible that I can have my cake and eat it too. Any thoughts?
I've got no definite roadmap for this project but I can see myself expanding my storage in a manner like this. On the RAID side of the house, I know about adding single drives but how does that play into data availability and shuffling around the parity data for that new drive? (Sorry if this...
Hey y'all.
I'm stuck in a rut right now and can't pick which route I want to go with my server. It's coming down to a ZFS based NAS running Solaris and Windows Home Server.
The main aim of the server project is to store my movies and stream them to a low power HTPC box. I'm planning on...
I've reinstalled about 3 times now and every trick in the book I've tried fails miserably.
When I get done with the install, I'm back to using the MS default driver for the RAID setup and that keeps causing me grief.
My adventures in Googling the problem have turned out nada as well...
Yeah, from what I understand is that Arconis is kind of dropping the ball and using the old defaults. I'm surprised they didn't get it right with the latest version of TI that supports Windows 7.
I'm new to this whole SSD thing (just picked up a Corsair P256) but I think I found what you are looking for here - http://forum.acronis.com/forum/4140
Win7/Vista default to a 1024kb offset when formatting. The whole alignment thing is for users with SSDs running Windows XP which defaults to...
Hi. I am looking at building a HTPC. I currently have Dish Network satellite TV and am wondering if anyone has tried building a MCE with the satellite. If so, any tips and pointers would be extremely welcomed.
