    Maximizing speeds using uTorrent

Okay, thanks. I'll try that. Hmmm... okay, but doesn't that sort of go against the idea of torrents, in the sense that I'm taking advantage of the fact that others are uploading (seeding is the same as uploading, isn't it)? Essentially, making the information on your rig available through the...

    Maximizing speeds using uTorrent

Hey wolf Okay, in that tutorial I linked to above, I found this I assume this is what you mean. This is mentioned as something that can have varying effects on your speeds, including causing slowdowns, but as always, I guess I need to try it. Thanks.

    Maximizing speeds using uTorrent

I did a title search for relevant threads, and I'm sort of surprised that almost nothing popped up. Briefly, I'm running Windows 7 and uTorrent, and I'm getting large variations in my download speeds. I found a good guide for optimizing speeds and went through almost every step suggested...

    how to surf anonymously

Came back to [H] tonight looking for info on VPNs. I'm not an IT pro like many of you, so I'm sort of confused as to why no one has mentioned a VPN as a way to surf anonymously. Isn't that the point of a VPN? Or do VPN and proxy host refer to the same thing?

    Asus UL80VT-A1 vs. X83VP-A1 for College/Gaming - opinions?

Okay, thanks for that comparison. We are going to sacrifice battery life for gaming performance on this one. I put one of these aside at NewEgg for $899 CDN, or about $840 US (thanks, helpful Newegg rep who told me how to do this!). I am just going to call Asus tomorrow and clarify the warranty...

    Asus UL80VT-A1 vs. X83VP-A1 for College/Gaming - opinions?

Hi guys After a few days of searching, I have come up with these two rigs which meet my needs. It's for a student gamer who will have only one computer for school, this laptop, and has been playing Crysis on low settings, Mass Effect 2, Bioshock 2 and Assassins Creed 2 on a mid-level desktop...

    Nvidia 9800GT-based rig: noob question

I think we've made the decision to go with the 4850 for now. We want to try to come in on budget. have you checked this out? www.directcanada.com I have CC down the street as well, but this place seems to have the lowest online price for some stuff (up here). By the way... if you...

WTB in Toronto: PCI video card for gaming rig

Sorry for this confusion guys. This kid is a computer head (albeit on a very limited budget) so the screw up has to be on my end. I asked him very specifically if he has a PCIe or PCI mobo and he said 'PCI - it's not the Express one'. So that means by mistake must be in what I called his card...

WTB in Toronto: PCI video card for gaming rig

Hi and thanks for that info. I will confirm with him that it's an 8800GT. Maybe there's an 8800 and an 8800 GT and he has the former? I'll also ask him why he said it's 'effectively 128 MB'. I think he was running this card on one of the Dell 21" TN panel widescreens, which are all 1680 x...

WTB in Toronto: PCI video card for gaming rig

Hi guys I've been getting some help from some of you on a gaming rig build I'm doing for a friend's kid. By coincidence, another one of his kids called me today and his PCI video card has gone down. This kid is also a gamer and so he needs something that will represent as much of an upgrade...

    Nvidia 9800GT-based rig: noob question

Excellent, Ergo. That rig in $USD will come in a bit higher than ours but I see there are a few upgrades, like the 4850 --> 4870 and the e8400. We'll take a look at the prices for your components in Canada. Thanks for that Newegg link. Strangely, they are not even close to a couple of the...

    Nvidia 9800GT-based rig: noob question

Thanks FatFed and kuyaglen. I'll get him to register his purchase right away. I hate to get him invloved in these 'mail-in rebate' deals because I'v found that they simply won't send them unless you bug them for 6 months about it. Many of the deals I've found have this component.
