Yes my problem was the SAS expander overheating. It has been resolved by attaching a 40mm fan onto the heatsink as advised by mwroobel & ND40oz. Thanks guys! and to all others who posted.
Netwerkz: Thanks for your input. I have 2 x KVR1333D3E9S already so I would like to purchase 2 x KVR1333D3E9S/8GB for 24GB first in order to stagger the cost. I can't mix unbuffered with buffered. Also I think the unbuffered with run at 1333Mhz with 32GB and the buffered only at 1066Mhz...
Yes there are people reporting the 8GB unbuffered chips working and taking them to 32GB. I just would like to get an actual confirmation that someone has used these chips before.
Can anyone confirm if these chips will be compatible in an X8SIL-F? I would like to use 4 to bring the system to 32GB. Thanks for any advice you may be able to offer.
DeCharche, I'm thinking that may well be what I have to do but I'd prefer to maintain airflow from front to back if possible and attach a fan either in parallel to the SAS expander or directly onto the heatsink
I suspect my HP SAS expander is overheating. I sometimes have intermittent storage system drop outs. It seems to happen more when the server is under load.
Has anyone experienced this problem at all?
Ok I believe I have narrowed this issue down further. I am using 9 of the RAID version of these drives which according to this article have an appreciable higher 5V draw than other drives. It looks like I'll have to drop some dollars on a high end PSU...
Ok that reminds me. I am only using one set of power connectors on the backplanes. Perhaps this has something to do with it?
Also Pkatruss are you using RAID and if so what type?

Olavgg, actually given that the stock Norco fan backplane is 5V driven that would definitely support your theory. Adding that back into the system was enough to reliably tip the power supply over and drop the raids off the system.
If I go for a Seasonic 80+ Gold X-1250W that would give me 5A...
olavgg I think you are right on the money with that. I am using large hardware RAIDs and not JBOD/Software RAID so the draw may be higher than with other Norco users.
What is the solution without spending huge $?. It looks like most Desktop PSU's all are 25A on the 5V rail.
