    Server room overhaul

While I understand our staffing is not ideal, I don't think an additional two full racks of batteries is a viable option. Neither is a generator considering we lease a single floor of a 5 story building and don't exactly have the flexibility to implement something like that. The power outages...

    Server room overhaul

I'm not worried about losing data, I'm more concerned with redundancy in terms of maintaining uptime. If we could figure out a way to keep everything up and running if in the event of hardware failure (These LSI cards run pretty hot... we've lost two in the last 5 years or so even at 68*F in...

    Server room overhaul

Hi folks, Our current setup is less than ideal. I'd like to add some redundancy / failover to this system if possible. At the moment, we have the following: -1x Supermicro 4U server (SSG-6047R-E1R24L) housing 4 LSI 9286CV-8e controllers -10x 24-bay JBOD with single SAS expanders (each with...

Slow rebuilds on RAID card (LSI 9286CV-8e)

Thought I'd add that this is in a Supermicro server that has had no issues with the other card or expansions connected to that card. I know they run hot so I added a large fan that encompasses them both so that they're always around 60C.

Slow rebuilds on RAID card (LSI 9286CV-8e)

I have two RAID cards in the system and they both seem to be functioning normally with the exception of one specific expansion chassis. It's a 24-bay Sans Digital box running RAID60 (4TB drives in 4 spans of 6) that was recently swapped out of a failed chassis. I put all the old drives...

    GigE switch traffic

Thanks to you both. That helps a lot in finding the right gear for the job.

Very scared, RAID5 not showing up. Any ideas?

Track down the backplane(s) used in the device and make the swap. It's the cheapest way to troubleshoot it hardware-wise. I've also had gear flip out on account of power issues in the building, although I doubt that's the case it's still a possibility and should be looked into. If you're...

    GigE switch traffic

I've been doing some research on storage solutions and am hoping to get a straight answer on one very important aspect - the maximum overall throughput of a gigabit switch. Is that gigabit shared throughout the unit, or can (theoretically) each individual drop be running at speeds that when...

*Official* Norco data storage products thread

Well damn. I suppose running 6 SFF-8087 through an unused slot into a 6-port controller could work, it's just a bit messy and limits me to a single unit. We're trying to keep everything "local" on a Mac Pro so that it's easier / faster for assistant editors. That and there's no way in hell...

*Official* Norco data storage products thread

Very informative read. I was about to pull the trigger on the DS-24e (with the built-in SAS expander) before I read this. I liked the idea of the expander not because it provided any performance increase, but because of cheap scalability and simplified cabling. LSI SAS6160 What I'm...
