    3ware 9650/9750-XX and Hitachi 2TB 2K7000

I use the card in between the two you have mention, the 9690-4i with 32 Hitachi 7K2000, this drive is on the 3ware comparability list http://www.3ware.com/products/pdf/Drive_compatibility_list_9690SA_9.5.3codeset_900-0070-02RevL.pdf

    SATA Port Multiplyer...

I have some questions, if you are going to use port multipliers, and I have nothing against them, I use them over hardware raid and SAS expanders quite often, but is an atom going to pull the weight of software raid? I guess my other question is what OS are you going to build this around? That...

    Best mdadm array

I actually did alot of research on this and was surprised to learn a smaller chuck size is usually going to be faster access for larger files. XFS will auto detect the details from mdadm for sunit and swidth which is great. And a 12 drive raid10 I have at work building right now :P Every...

Why so many pick WHS instead of, say, Freenas?

I have to admit this is the #1 selling point for me as well. I do enjoy playing with my toys, and I have been known to mess stuff up beyond repair at times, or it is just easier/quicker to restore from that mornings backup. I use WHS solely for backups and hosting MSSQL for mymovies, I...

TLER / CCTL / ERC thread

The only Hitachi to drop out turned out to be an actual bad drive. I've been very impressed with Hitachi overall, but like everyone else, they seem to have an excessively high bad out of the bag rate, much higher then I remember it being 10-20 years ago. I'm speaking overall, and no...

TLER / CCTL / ERC thread

I only have 5 WD20EARS, and I imagine all were from the same lot, but I've seen similar results from other people posting on their tests with smartctl around the net. As I understand it, and I'd have to search it out again to find where I saw it, but scterc is in the S.M.A.R.T. ATA-8 spec...

TLER / CCTL / ERC thread

I hope this will help you some with your article. I too have been frustrated with consumer grade drives timing out of my hardware raid (3ware 9690-4i + 2 Chenbo expanders) and I've now been able to keep everything stable after lots of trial and error. I had everything working well with 1...

    HD204UI Questions

I've used RMA services within the past 2 months for WD, Hitachi, and Samsung. I'd give small props to WD over the others simply for the fact you can do an advanced RMA with a small deposit. Personally I prefer Samsung as I am on the east coast and their RMA center is as well. Honestly I've...

    Hard drive corruption?

You might try checking the drive with the manufactures utility as it will mark bad blocks. Simply format/install will not, so these same problems would reoccur if there is a physical problem with the drive and some of it's sectors.

The [H]ard Forum Storage Showoff Thread - Post your 10TB+ systems

xfs_fsr ? You give a compelling discussion for checking out JFS though, I will have to try it out myself. I've been using XFS for some time on my OpenFiler boxes just as NFS servers for backup of my web servers (I own a small hosting company) but have been testing various configurations at...
