peersonally i'll be getting a new gfx card next and when the time comes for a hexa(or octa)core i'll transplant the gfx into the new one, and dust off my current card...
it could also be the driver support (the more benchmarked games getting patched/hotfixed, while the unpopular ones don't) or lack thereof. and let's not forget the game detection in the drivers, where the drivers when detecting a game or bench suite will lower quality levels to up the framerate...

i think eyefinity will be more useful to pro's who don't want to pay for a pro graphics card with more than 2 outputs (4850x2 was an exception to that)
for gaming i think that it'll move to higher res screens (like a faster version of the viewsonic vp2290...
