It's probably cheaper in the long run to buy a calibrator than paying someone to do the calibration. I would recommend doing calibration at least once a month if you are doing color-critical work because the color and luminance will shift as the monitor ages. Take a look at X-Rite calibrators.

Yes, the default setting is fill, but for best image quality, 1:1 is preferred, depending on the the image original resolution; i.e., if the image resolution is less than the monitor native resolution, you will see either (1) black bars for 1:1 or (2) lower image quality for fill.
