It happened suddenly, but I did reformat. I don't recall when I installed the chipset drivers prior to the format, whether or not the ATI driver was already installed... I will try installing them first, then the ati driver, and reverting as you say

I haven't installed the chipset drivers... On that page you linked, it says to revert to the Microsoft driver "PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge"... since I haven't installed my chipset drivers, I already am using the "PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge" driver... I also tried installing my chipset...

I have been experiencing this problem for a few weeks now and have just been running without any display drivers installed. I finally buckled down and reinstalled Windows XP last night and after installing the video drivers the BSOD returned. I haven't installed the hyperion chipset drivers, so...

LIke DremoraLord said, they refresh differently, CRT monitors would noticible flicker at 60hz causing all sorts of potential health problems (eye irritation, headeaches, etc...) On LCDs this will not occur.

Definately go nvidia, AMD + ATI has screwed me on so many occasions
