how about getting an x-fi xtreme audio ? if they use the same analog out as the platinum you should be in for a sweet ride :)

when your speakers + amp are up to par.. the biggest thing that could impact the sound would be the source :)

oh. what happens if they're not sats and they're bookshelf speakers with linear frequency response ? my monitor audio s2s claim 40hz but a review mentioned they go into the low 30s. i've also tested that with a test cd and it did have energy at 32hz.
