Some users have recently had their accounts hijacked. It seems that the now defunct EVGA forums might have compromised your password there and seems many are using the same PW here. We would suggest you UPDATE YOUR PASSWORD and TURN ON 2FA for your account here to further secure it. None of the compromised accounts had 2FA turned on.
Once you have enabled 2FA, your account will be updated soon to show a badge, letting other members know that you use 2FA to protect your account. This should be beneficial for everyone that uses FSFT.
OK, I just knocked the rocks out of my head and stuck the SATA 2 drive from the Sony into an older laptop, and it took 20 minutes to boot. So it IS the drive.
Thanks for the help!
Just tried Safe mode with the older drive, and it failed as Windows came up after loading the generic drivers. Still don't know if this is a drive or controller issue. Nertz.
Maybe, but I've swapped drives in various laptops a dozen times in the past, and never had the BSOD before. It usually just updates the drivers and reboots several times. In this case it fails at the first sign of Windows coming up, right at the first logo.
I did try to do that with the original drive, and it still took 20 minutes to boot. I will try your suggestion with the older SATA 1 drive and see if that workks.
Thanks!
I have a Sony Vaio laptop with a WD 500GB SATA 2 drive in it. It has been wanting to run startup repair on every boot. When it does boot it takes 20 minutes to come up.
In order to see if this is a hard drive or controller problem, I stuck a 160 GB SATA 1 drive from an older laptop in it...
