    Extreme Cheap/Minimum HTPC for Netflix

Fantastic. Good info. Thanks! I looked through the Dell website and didn't see anything near the price range. I took your feedback and put together something cheaper, though. How well could I expect this to perform (1080p video on a 42", Netflix, possible file/media server even)? Ignore the SSD...

    Extreme Cheap/Minimum HTPC for Netflix

I'm not focused on DRM free, but it's a preference. Same reason why I prefer linux over windows. I want something open and modifiable. Why would you want DRM garbage on your system, you know? I don't plan on recording streams.

    Extreme Cheap/Minimum HTPC for Netflix

Help me understand: The cpu has the integrated graphics, and there's not much to bottleneck it, right? Is there a lower-grade Pentium that will integrate into a mobo with on-board graphics and an HDMI out of this quality? Whats wrong with the SS? In actuality, I'll surf dealnews.com for a week...

    Extreme Cheap/Minimum HTPC for Netflix

Any browser within PS3 is awful, but the web browser is particularly bad. I was doing some tinkering on pcpartpicker... Am I missing something here or would this work perfectly? PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks CPU: Intel Core i3-2120 3.3GHz Dual-Core...

    Extreme Cheap/Minimum HTPC for Netflix

Browser isn't very efficient, and I'd prefer something without DRM hard-baked into it.

    Extreme Cheap/Minimum HTPC for Netflix

Interesting. That's unfortunate about linux. Scrapping that thought, then. The PS3 is so limited that I'd like to figure out what the next-best thing is. Considered WD Live, but same limited concept. Something open, moddable and DRM-free would be ideal.

    Extreme Cheap/Minimum HTPC for Netflix

Hey guys, I'm looking to sell my PS3 and replace it with a small-form HTPC to hook up to my 42" TV. My ideal budget is less than $200. The PC will be used for streaming movies off my home media server as well as streaming Netflix (whether it's 720p or 1080p isn't important to me). It's not...

Excellent feedback. I'm going to scrap this particular build and work on a more focused setup. Thanks for your help!

New Work Computer - Please Review

Very cool. Glad to have your input! Do you have any idea how ArcMap handles this "large memory awareness" stuff? I know ArcMap doesn't tap into 64-bit potential and cannot use more than 4GB of RAM, but I've been reading that it still makes use of the additional RAM in certain functions. Is 16GB...

New Work Computer - Please Review

Interesting. I'm not sure how much weight to place on that information because there are so many different ways ArcMap can be used. Although I just found this as well: http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/8864-Arcgis-performance-difference-between-workstation-and-consumer-hardware I think I'll...

    Lines in my laptop monitor

Yeah, that's what I've been doing. Was considering giving it to my Grandmother-in-law, but wanted her to be able to use it as a portable machine. Thanks for the advice. If I can find the screen for less than $100, I'll try repairing it myself.

Not at all. You think it's worth replacing?

    Lines in my laptop monitor

I've got a HP Pavilion dv8000 laptop that's about five or six years old. It still runs great, but there are several bright lines that run from the top to the bottom of the monitor. I'm guessing it's the beginning of a GPU failure, but I'm not sure. Can anyone identify the source of these...

[Rant] Finally getting sick of Windows Argh!

You mean.. free isn't an incentive when compared to the ~$200/copy it costs for Win7 Ultimate? I work for a company with 800 employees. If it costs just $70 to upgrade to Win7 from WinXP, that costs the company $56,000. Yes, it's difficult to port applications and drivers to other platforms...
