    super budget performance desktop ~$500

OK, I asked that question because oddly enough an ATX case is gonna be more cost-effective than a mATX case since many $50 to $60 ATX cases comes with at least two fans and significantly better cable management whereas many mATX cases in that price range have only one fan, somewhat hard to cable...

I have a power cord, yes. What PSU would you recommend? Also I'm not very familiar with windows 7 or 8. I hear lots of complaints about 8 but is there any real reason why it's worse besides people not liking the metro interface?

APFC is active power factor correction, any recent and worth touching PSU design has this. The lack of APFC is a big warning sign. - alright. how about Antec EarthWatts Green EA-380D Green 380W You can save some bucks on the windows license, if you have an existing windows install. Check out...

    super budget performance desktop ~$500

Is the DVD burner IDE or SATA? - SATA Do you absolutely need a mATX setup? - no, but i think i prefer it. Any chance whatsoever of you adding a 3rd party GPU to the system? - If I get into computer gaming, I'd like to have the option. I don't care about having all the hyper-realistic graphics...

    super budget performance desktop ~$500

    1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? I'm not really sure yet. I basically want the computer to be a jack-of-all-trades, light gaming, photoshop, multimedia, etc. 2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included? The cheaper the better, I will spend more...

    First time HTPC critique

I chose the FSP psu because I just read a review on anandtech where an FSP got a gold editors choice. I'm more than happy to switch to an antec psu if it's better, they used to be the only power supplies I bought. I was wondering if the SSD is really necessary. I was just going to use it for...

    calibrating HDTV as tv monitor

So I splurged and bought a new 60" for my living room. I am now using my old 42" 1080p LCD for my computer monitor. Right now the 42" is the main display and my 24" is my second monitor. The 42" is hooked up with HDMI and my 24" is connected with DVI; both to my 8500gt video card. Here's the...

I have an extra 500g hard drive in my computer that I don't need so I don't need to purchase a hard drive either. what are some good am3 boards in the sub $100 range? i think the 2.8ghz phenom II x4 is what i'm going with, how noticeable would a 10% overclock be just in day to day usage, no...

    building budget desktop for mom.

thanks for the reply, it's very helpful. so is there any reasoning behind getting a micro atx board or is it just a better value and will fit normally? also, will a board running HDMI out carry both audio and video to a monitor with built in speakers? if so it'd be cool to get a board with...

    building budget desktop for mom.

thanks for the reply. What's with the mATX board in a 300 case? the boost in processor and increase in ram seem like pretty safe calls. is the phenom 2 945 the best choice. The 940 seems like a better buy if those are my options. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103471

the only thing in my area is bestbuy so probably getting everything online. i'll update the ram selection. also is there a noticeable performance increase from 2-4gb? To afford it i'd need to take about $35 from the other components so suggestions are welcome.

    building budget desktop for mom.

My mom was talking about buying a new desktop from HP and I didn't want to see her get an inferior product so I'm deciding to build a rig for her. Her price point is $550 hard and i want to squeeze every penny to get her a lasting machine. She doesn't do a lot of intense work on her computer...

    Hot Monitor

try and move it away from the wall or anything that would disrupt airflow. It really doesn't sound like a problem to me but if you want you can throw a desktop fan beside it.
