I'd imagine it's the antennas that are soldered-down not the M.2 card.

I've got an ASUS chrome box ($134 from amazon) which I flashed with new bios ( https://johnlewis.ie/custom-chromebook-firmware/rom-download/ ) and then installed ChromeOS and it works like a charm. All the hardware seems to be supported out of the box and the CPU has hardware decoding support.
