Intel has a funny habit of changing CPU sockets with every tock generation recently. I wouldn't bet on much future proofing because AMD hasn't been competitive so they have little incentive to provide upgradability without causing users to have to buy the whole shebang.

It didn't really fail. They just didn't think about scale and the manual overhead that comes from being a curated store front to that of eBay.
Given the lack of structure around Valve I can see how this can happen. But... that's life. You learn and move on to hopefully not make the same mistake.
Soundcards aren't really necessary these days. If you want to get an upgrade consider getting something like an FiiO e10 which should give you a better DAC.
