    Lab build help

If you have the available PCI-e x4 slots (and i would think you would based on those motherboards) you can try 4gbps fibrechannel for cheap. In my plan, I will be putting a 2 port Qlogic QLE2462 in my storage box, and single port QLE2460s in 2 ESXI hosts. The cards are less than $12 on...

3 disk RAID 5: worth it?

I use and like StableBit Drive Pool (as I have different sized disks but you can use it with same size disks obviously) instead of a raid solution for my current storage situation. It allows you to pool the drives together for more space and you can set duplication up at the folder or file...

    Fiber or Point-to-Point?

I checked the price for a terminated duplex single mode LC-LC 325 foot fiber patch cable at fiberstore.com and it was around $20. http://www.fiberstore.com/lc-lc-duplex-9-125-single-mode-fiber-patch-cable-p-12189.html If you don't mind waiting for it to get to you from Hong Kong, it may save...

New to fiber. Need help getting this to work

Wouldn't you just need to get a GBIC that is compatible with your switch to plug into the media converter instead of getting another media converter setup? You didn't mention which end is single mode and which end is multimode but it looks like converter accepts GBICs to handle either.

Advice requested for home lab setup

Thank you all for your input. I am definitely leaning toward the Lenovo with the E3-1225 now. I'll add 8GB sticks of RAM as finances allow until I max it. Thinking of the overkill of 12 cores with the T7500 was holding me back. Again, thanks for the opinions!

Advice requested for home lab setup

I am contemplating a home lab for ESXI that will be used for learning and also serving media, files, and hosting backups. Option 1: a used precision T7500 from http://www.stikc.com with dual x5650, 8GB ram, and minimize all other components as I have HDs, etc. that I will use already. around...

Cheapest place to get a Windows 7 Enterprise (I can validate through my school)

As a former student and former employee of Louisiana State University, I can say without a doubt that some universities are allowed to and do, give Windows 7 Enterprise to students for use on one (1) of their own computers. This computer must check in with the licensing server every 180 days...

    Gaming laptop question

So, if I don't order it with an mSATA SSD, then it will not have ANY mSATA slots, is that correct? If so, I guess I'm going with the Sager NP8295 and upgrade the video card.

    Gaming laptop question

Is there any reason to not get a gaming laptop based on an MSI GT70 barebones build? I am looking at a FORCE / MSI 1763 (22-001) 780M (MSI GT70 Barebones) from Xoticpc as it appears the cheapest way to get a 780m GPU. I don't care that the keyboard won't have different color lights and...
